Lekki Port has made history as it successfully berthed the Maersk Edirne, a colossal 13,092 TEUs container ship, marking a significant achievement for Nigeria’s maritime sector.

The vessel, part of the CMA CGM WAX service, arrived at Lekki Port at 2:42 p.m on Sunday, contributing to a new port rotation that includes key locations such as Xiamen, Qingdao, Shanghai, Singapore, Lekki Port, and Abidjan.

As the sole Nigerian port in this impressive rotation, Lekki Port stands out with its modern facilities and world-class equipment, capable of accommodating such large vessels.

The MAERSK EDIRNE, boasting an overall length of 366 meters and a width of 48 meters, exemplifies the port’s capacity for handling maritime giants.

The next eagerly anticipated arrival at Lekki Port is the CMA CGM Scandola, a LNG-powered vessel with a carrying capacity of 14,000 TEUs, further reinforcing the port’s commitment to handling diverse and sizable cargo.

Mr. Biodun Dabiri, Chairman of Lekki Port, lauded the management team for this milestone, emphasizing that it propels Lagos State and Nigeria onto the global maritime stage, positioning the nation as a maritime hub in sub-Saharan Africa.

He credited the achievement to the port’s state-of-the-art infrastructure and capabilities.

After the vessel’s arrival, Laurence Smith, Chief Operating Officer of Lekki Port, expressed optimism about the positive impact on the nation’s economy.

He praised Lekki Freeport Terminal, a subsidiary of CMA CGM, for their dedicated efforts in providing top-notch terminal services since the port’s commercial operations began in April 2023.

This achievement is poised to boost cargo delivery and reduce shipping costs, contributing significantly to Nigeria’s economic growth.
