The death toll from an explosion at a Coal Mining site in central China has risen to 13, with three people still missing, according to According to Tianan Coal Mining, the mine’s parent company.

The blast occurred at a mine in Pingdingshan, Henan province, and was initially reported to have caused 10 deaths and six missing individuals. Pingdingshan Tianan Coal Mining confirmed the higher death toll in a statement released on Sunday.

The company further stated that they are conducting all-out search and rescue efforts to find the missing individuals. Production has been halted at over a dozen mines owned by the company due to concerns about production safety.

The explosion took place at a subsidiary of Pingdingshan Tianan Coal Mining and occurred while 425 people were working underground, as reported by state news agency Xinhua. Authorities have taken into custody those in charge of the mine.

While mining safety in China has shown improvement in recent years, accidents are still prevalent in an industry with a history of poor safety regulations and enforcement. The incident underscores the ongoing issues faced by the industry and the need for stricter safety measures.
