Syria says Israeli airstrikes kill at least 4 outside of Damascus

Israeli airstrikes on the outskirts of Damascus has killed at least four Syrian soldiers and wounded four others, the state-run news agency said on Monday.

The Syrian News Agency, SANA, cited a military source, saying that at dawn on Monday the Israeli enemy carried out an air aggression from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan.

It targeted some points in the vicinity of the city of Damascus.

It added that Syrian air defences were able to down some of the missiles.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which had been monitoring violence in Syria since 2011, put the death toll from the strikes at six and the number of wounded at seven.

It said the Israeli raids targeted areas containing warehouses and military sites belonging to Iranian militias.

The war monitor said that those that were killed include four Syrian government soldiers and two unidentified persons.

The Israeli military did not comment on the reports.

Israel regularly bombs targets in neighbouring war-torn Syria in an effort to prevent arch-rival Iran from expanding its influence there.

Tehran has been a main backer of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad since the uprising against his rule in 2011.
