Students at Araromi Ilogbo Secondary School in Oko Afo, Lagos State, staged a protest on Thursday in response to the alleged death of their classmate, David Babadipo.

The death was reportedly caused by intense flogging from a teacher named Oluwale. A video showed students scattering both inside and outside the school grounds.

David, a 16-year-old who had been ill for several days, was taken to the hospital following the alleged flogging, where he was later pronounced dead.

THE PUNCH reported there were conflicting narratives on social media, with one user claiming that the teacher, Mr Oluwale, was a Vice Principal and denied any physical punishment. However, others maintained that the student was fatally beaten, causing unrest among the students.

As the community reacts, there are concerns about the teacher’s safety, with speculations that he might not survive the ensuing turmoil. Efforts to obtain comments from the school and confirmation from the police about the incident’s report were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.

Commenting on the video, an X user, Mama Sassy D, wrote, “This is my vicinity. They have started rioting already. The said teacher might not survive this period.”
“First and foremost, Mr Oluwale is a Vice Principal and he didn’t beat him for not paying attention in class because he doesn’t teach, he didn’t even beat him at all.

“That child has (sic) been sick since Tuesday and the parent didn’t take him to the hospital. It got worse yesterday afternoon after the break and they called his parents to come to pick him up,” she wrote.

“The teacher is named Mr Olawale, (a) vice principal. The case has been reported to the Morogbo Police Station at Badagry Expressway, Lagos State. David Babadipo was a native of Ipoti Ekiti State.”
