A United States firm, Blackwell Security Services Inc., will pay $70,000 and offer relief to resolve a religious discrimination lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).

The EEOC on Saturday accused Blackwell of refusing accommodation for a Muslim concierge’s religious practice, compelling him to choose between his faith and job. Despite no operational burden, Blackwell insisted on a clean-shaven policy, leading the employee to comply and shave his beard, causing significant distress.

The alleged conduct violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois (Civil Action No.1:23-cv-14110) after unsuccessful pre-litigation settlement attempts.
