The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has given its assurance that the uploading of election results from Bayelsa, Imo and Kogi to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) will proceed without any glitches.

INEC’s failure to swiftly submit results from polling units to the Result Viewing Portal stirred controversy in the months following the 2023 presidential election.

Opposition groups accused INEC of participating in the manipulation of election results in favour of eventual winner Bola Tinubu.

However, on Friday, INEC’s Chief Press Secretary, Rotimi Oyekanmi, pointed out on Channels Television that all technological difficulties had been fixed and that the elections should go off without any difficulties.

“We have been using the IReV for all governorship elections, but [2023] was the first time we deployed it for the general elections setting. We had a glitch for some hours, and we fixed it,” he explained.

“I can affirm that those technical issues have been resolved. Last week, we undertook the mock accreditation, and one of the reasons we did that was to test run these technology gadgets we were going to use, and it was successful,” he added.

Oyekanmi admitted that technology challenges can occur at any time but claimed that INEC had learned from its mistakes during the 2023 general elections.

“Technology can throw up challenges, but by and large, we have learnt our lessons from the 2023 general elections,” he said.

In addition to addressing technical issues, Oyekanmi also clarified what INEC does with the IReV portal. He explained that INEC does not transmit results but rather uploads them.

“All we are doing is that we are taking a picture of the polling unit results and uploading same to the portal,” he said.
