The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the opening of its portal for the online accreditation of journalists and media organizations interested in covering the Edo State governorship election, scheduled for September 21, 2024.

In April 2024, INEC published the final list of 17 candidates for the election, including Ighodalo Asuerinme of the Peoples Democratic Party, who was recently disqualified by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Other candidates include Okpebholo Monday of the All Progressives Congress, Patient Ndidi of the People’s Redemption Party, and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party.

In a notice released on Friday, the commission stated that the accreditation portal will open on Monday, July 8, and close on September 5.

INEC urged media organizations to ensure their reporters are registered within this timeframe, emphasizing that no extensions will be granted after the deadline.

The notice read, “INEC wishes to announce the commencement of online accreditation for journalists and media organizations intending to cover the Edo State governorship election.

Media organizations interested in deploying journalists to cover the election are expected to apply via the commission’s website.

The portal will open on Monday, July 8, 2024, and close on Thursday, September 5, 2024. Late submissions will not be entertained as the portal will automatically shut down at midnight on September 5, 2024, with no extension of time.”
