Mike Edwards, a two-time high jump champion from Nigeria, has unexpectedly decided to pursue a career in professional boxing.

Edwards made the announcement on Friday directly via his social media accounts.

The former Big Brother Naija contestant reaffirmed his choice to compete in Misfits Boxing’s cruiserweight division, which is a big step away from his track and field background.

In his statement, Edwards expressed his excitement about the new chapter, stating, “Breaking News: Excited to announce my entry into the world of professional boxing! Thrilled to join the Cruiserweight division roster on @MisfitsBoxing. Get ready for an electrifying debut as I step into the ring to showcase my skills and determination.”
Edwards has an impressive athletic background. Before renouncing his allegiance to Nigeria in August 2018, he competed as a track and field athlete for the United Kingdom.

In the high jump, he won the Nigerian national championship twice in 2021 and 2022 with a lifetime best of 2.25 meters.

Additionally, he made it to the African Athletics Championship final twice, just missing out on the gold in 2022. Edwards further demonstrated his abilities on a worldwide platform when he qualified for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Edwards’ supporters are now excitedly awaiting his entry into the professional boxing scene, where he hopes to leave his mark using his abilities and tenacity.
