Traders give reason for hike in food price

NEWS DIGEST – Traders of food items, particularly staple food, have revealed that the inflation in prices of some foodstuffs is unconnected to the Easter celebration.

Mostly, inflation in prices of foodstuffs can be associated with festivities, of which Easter celebration is one. This festival is celebrated amongst Christians in order to commemorate the death and resurrection of Christ.

In a visit to Owode market in Offa local government of Kwara state,The News Digest gathered that the price of Beans, Maize, Corn and millet have increased.

“We sold a bag of Rice for 14,000 but now 16,000. Other prices are the normal ones. Easter has not affected any of them.” One of the traders confirmed.

Another trader, Mrs Nwakigbe, explained that the only costly food items presently are Tomatoes and Fresh pepper, being sold for over 15,000 per basket.
“I had to buy dry pepper, which is not the best.” she said.

Our correspondent also learnt that Tomatoes and pepper are expensive because of the decrease in rain fall. The price of Rice, on the other hand, went up because of the fall in the importation of the staple food recently.

Meanwhile, a resident in Abeokuta of Ogun state, Oladapo Munirat, confirmed to The News Digest that the market situation is the same in the state.

“Except for the price of rice and pepper, the food items’ prices are at the normal level in Abeokuta.” she stated.
