Zenith Bank Plc has named Dr. Adaora Umeoji as its incoming Group Managing Director, effective June 1, 2024.

The announcement was made in a statement released by the Company Secretary, Michael Otu, and filed with the Nigerian Exchange Limited on Tuesday.

Dr. Umeoji will succeed the current GMD, Dr. Ebenezer Onyeagwu, whose tenure concludes on May 31.

“Dame (Dr.) Adaora Umeoji will be the first female GMD/CEO in the bank’s history, aligning with the institution’s tradition of executive transition, succession planning, and internal leadership development,” part of the statement reads.

Prior to assuming this role, Umeoji served as the Deputy Managing Director of the bank starting from October 28, 2016, bringing nearly three decades of banking expertise, with 26 of those years dedicated to Zenith Bank.

Umeoji is an alumnus of Harvard Business School, where she attended the  Advanced Management Programme, and an alumnus of Columbia Business School with a Certificate in the Global Banking Program.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Jos, a bachelor’s degree in accounting, and a first-class honours degree in law from Baze University, Abuja.

With this appointment, Umeoji will join the ranks of female bank MDs in Nigeria and make her the first female MD of the bank.
