Who Will Be The 2022 Campus Journalist Of The Year?

NEWS DIGEST – The rich and enviable history of journalism in Nigeria cannot be complete without mentioning the strides of campus journalism and its numerous amazing products.

It is a statement of fact that most celebrated Nigerian journalists cut their teeth from campus journalism.

But as checkered as the early history of campus journalism is, the need to groom young journalists from campuses to check the desecration of the pen profession by charlatans and quacks, cannot be overemphasized.

Hence, the need to launch a platform solely for celebrating, and also nurturing strong values and media ethics for our young journalists.

As concerned and patriotic organizations, Youths Digest and CISLAC, have over the years, worked so hard to ensure that campus journalists are availed a platform to market and celebrate their sheer reporting and writing talents. Among its brilliant initiatives, include the annual ‘Campus Journalism Awards’ (CJA).

Though, there are other categories in the CJA programme, the ‘Campus Journalist of the Year’, stands out. It is aimed at celebrating one campus journalist, out of many outstanding.

In 2018, at the inaugural CJA event, Mr. Alfred Olufemi, was crowned the ‘Campus Journalist of the Year’. He has since gone ahead to make a name for himself in the pen-pushing profession, as a rising journalist.

In 2019, Maryam Abdullahi, who won the ‘Campus Journalist of the Year’ award at the 2019 edition of CJA, is the first female to achieve the feat. She, as a student of the Usmanu Dan Fodio University (UDUS), carved a niche for herself, thanks to her extraordinary reporting and opinion writing prowess.

In 2020, Mohammed Dahiru Lawal was crowned the ‘Campus Journalist of The year. He was the only BUK student shortlisted and awarded with a certificate of excellence for being a finalist in the 3rd annual edition of the youths digest campus journalism awards 2020.

Last year, Abdulhaleem Ishaq-Ringim, at the time, was a first year student of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU). He emerged as the ‘Campus Journalist Of the Year’ thanks to his outstanding writing skills. He has since gone on to be a great writer and create paths for other students who hope to become journalists.

The 2022 CJA, will not be any different. With 334 entries, 50 finalists, 12 awardees, together with the prized ‘Campus Journalist of the Year’ award, it promises to be a bomb, as all roads lead to Hotel 2020 wuye in Abuja, on December 10, 2022, for the spectacular one-in-a-million award gala, designed for celebrating the best of Nigerian, cum African campus journalists.
