Heavy rains destroy buildings in University of Ibadan

NEWS DIGEST – In the evening of Friday, April 6th 2018, Ibadan witnessed an unusual heavy downpour causing massive floods in parts of the city. The rain, accompanied with thunderstorms, lasted for more than one hour, confined many residents to their apartments in the evening, until it later subsided.

In a similar vein, some buildings in the University of Ibadan community were affected by the torrential downpour, notably among the buildings were Block-C, Lord Tedder Hall, Kunle Adepeju Students’ Union Building amongst others.

Eyewitnesses in the University community who were caught in the rain yesterday explained that no life was lost, the rain which lasted for hours led to the loss of properties for some of residents of Lord Tedder Hall, especially occupants of room 4,5,6 and 7 in Block-C, as there was free flow of water into the rooms and consequently causing damage to properties. The students’ Union Building known as Kunle Adepeju Building also shared in the unfortunate occurrence as mere ceilings could be seen after the roofs were pulled by the wind which accompanied the rain.

It should be recalled that the University management recently released a new hostel and school fees schedule which has attracted complaints and demonstrations by students and stakeholders due to its outrageous increase from #14,000 to #30,000 for the Undergraduate halls, #40,000 for medical students in Alexander Brown Hall and #120,000 for students in Post graduate hall.

While the VC disclosed that the University is no longer in the financial capacity to subsidize the halls of residence which the Federal Government had long ceased to fund adequately, he said that maintaining each student in the Hall (Undergraduate) costs about #59,000 each session.
