The Rivers State House of Assembly Complex has been placed under police control as tensions escalate between rival factions within the legislature.

The policemen reportedly stationed themselves at the first and second gates of the lawmakers’ estate, while approximately 25 patrol vans blocked the remaining entrances.

This action occurred shortly after Speaker Martins Amaewhule accused Governor Sim Fubara of planning to demolish the legislative quarters.

The state assembly is embroiled in a crisis following the emergence of a factional speaker, Victor Oko Jumbo.

The Clerk of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Emeka Amadi, however rejected Fubara’s Assembly faction, asserting that Martin Amaewhule remains the legitimate Speaker.

This development is amidst the ongoing conflict between Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, regarding the state’s political structures.

On Thursday, Fubara made an unannounced visit to the facility, stating that he was there to inspect the premises following the appointment of a new speaker.
