NEWS DIGEST- The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has cautioned retired army colonel Zamani Lekwot against deploying hate campaigns and propaganda to instigate conflict in Nigeria.

CNG spokesperson Abdul-Azeez Suleiman issued the warning following Lekwot’s interview with the Daily Trust Newspaper regarding the Zangon Kataf crisis. In the interview, Lekwot explained how he was falsely accused of importing weapons and how that triggered the riot that led to the Zangon Kataf crisis in 1993.

However, CNG recalled that a commission of inquiry set up by the military administration in 1993 had found Lekwot instrumental in organizing attacks on Hausa-Fulani communities in Zangon Kataf and other areas, resulting in several deaths and displacement of thousands.

“They fixed a date and attacked a nearby village and that was what triggered the riot. Then the villagers responded, their neighbours also responded, this was how it started”. He said.
