The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) leadership has stepped into the ring of political speculation, addressing the swirling rumors of a potential political marriage between Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) and Atiku Abubakar from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2023 elections.

In a report brought to light by The Punch on Monday, Joe Ajaero, the president of the NLC, made it clear that the congress was caught off guard by murmurs of merger talks involving the LP and various political factions across the nation.

The LP, standing as a beacon of socio-democratic values, was born from the loins of organized labor and received its stamp of approval from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

However, recent conversations between Obi and the PDP’s Atiku have ignited whispers of a potential fusion between the LP and the PDP. Obi’s rendezvous reportedly extended to prominent figures within the PDP ranks, including the likes of former Senate President Bukola Saraki and erstwhile Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido.

When pressed on the NLC’s stance regarding talks that could potentially dissolve the Labour Party or entangle organized labor, Ajaero affirmed the NLC’s lack of awareness concerning such deliberations, as per BusinessDay’s report.

Adding to the mix, Omokri weighed in, suggesting that Atiku Abubakar, NNPP flagbearer Rabiu Kankwaso, and former Kaduna state governor Nasir El-Rufai might not be keen on aligning with Obi, contrary to widespread assumptions. Omokri pondered the implications of Obi’s olive branch to northern power players within the PDP, emphasizing that “right now, Peter Obi is tainted.”
