Nigerian universities union clear air on planned strike action

NEWS DIGEST – Contrary to reports making the rounds on some media over a planned strike action by the Nigerian universities over a disparity in their Earned Allowances, the Joint Action Committee of the universities has said that it had concluded negotiations with the Federal Government and now awaits implementation.

NEWS DIGEST reports that the union, which consisted of Non-Academic Staffs Union of Universities, Senior Staffs Association of Nigerian Universities and Non-Academic Technologists union, has ended negotiation with the Government seven weeks ago.

Speaking with NEWS DIGEST, the Public Relations Officer of SSANU, Abdusobbour Salaam, said “It is true we are awaiting implementation of the agreements, but no decision was also taken on strike action at our last National Executive Council Meeting.”

Recall that the Union has had disagreement with the Federal Government on issues bordering welfare of its members following a disparity in the sharing formula of a released 23billion Naira Earned Allowance which ASUU reportedly got 89% while JAC(NASU,SSANU,NAAT) got 11% of the released funds.
