Organised labour in Niger State has taken a decisive step by announcing an indefinite industrial action set to commence today.

This was made known in a formal letter addressed to the State government through the Secretary to State Government, signifying a stand against unresolved disputes.

The statement jointly signed by Idris A. Lafene, the state Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC); and Ibrahim Gana, the state Chairman of the Teachers Union Congress (TUC);  outlines the grievances and the terms for ending the strike.

The labour union emphasised that the industrial action would persist until all outstanding disputes between the government and organised labour were resolved satisfactorily.

Among the key demands put forth by the labour union is the reversal of political appointments, particularly those of Executive Directors of Finance, Operations, and Administration in various agencies. Additionally, they called for the reversal of appointments within the Local Government Service Commission, Civil Service Commission, and certain agency directorates.

One critical demand centres on clarity regarding wage award payments. They further seek a clear statement from the government regarding the fulfilment of wage awards.

Furthermore, the labour union cautioned against the appointment of unqualified civil servants as permanent secretaries, urging the government to promote career progression from within.

They also warned against any victimization of teachers and members of the educational sector, particularly in light of recent events surrounding a primary school debate in Agaie.

The memorandum, which serves as an official notice, specifies that the strike action will commence at 8 am on Wednesday, February 21, 2024.

It unequivocally states that Niger State workers will continue with the indefinite strike until their demands are comprehensively met.
