The House of Representatives has requested that the Federal Ministry of Works prioritise the construction of pedestrian bridges along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

The locations include the Technical University, Toll Gate in Ibadan, Felele, Soka, Sanyo, Boluwaji, Academy and Eleruku.

The lower chamber made the request after Tolulope Akande-Sadipe, who represents Oluyole Federal Constituency in Oyo state, spoke at a recent plenary about the need for pedestrian bridges to improve road safety and save lives.

Mrs Akande-Sadipe told journalists on Thursday that recent construction work on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway had transformed it into a “death trap” for both pedestrians and motorists.

She voiced concern about the high number of deadly accidents that occur on a daily basis as people attempt to cross the highway to get to their schools, homes, workplaces, and marketplaces.

“The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, traversing highly populated sections of the city, has become an essential corridor for daily activities,” she said.

“However, the absence of pedestrian bridges has undervalued the safety of both pedestrians and drivers.”

She went on to say that once built, the proposed bridges will be critical in saving lives and alleviating the sufferings of commuters, particularly schoolchildren.

She concluded by pressuring the Federal Ministry of Works to include funds for the construction of pedestrian bridges in the budget estimates for 2024.
