Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has praised the role President-elect Bola Tinubu played towards the development of the Dangote Refinery in Lekki.

Mr Sanwo-Olu credited Mr Tinubu’s ambition to establish the Lekki Trade Free Zone to help the state attract investments while he was governor of Lagos State between 1999 and 2007.

Aliko Dangote, Chairman of the Dangote Group, and numerous industry experts have previously praised the Lekki Free Trade Zone idea for laying the groundwork for the development of the refinery.

During his speech at the commissioning, Mr Dangote alluded to the President-elect as the “Asiwaju of Nigeria”, referring to him as Nigeria’s frontman, which is a marked reference to the innovations led by Mr Tinubu.

Gov. Sanwo-Olu applauded the Dangote Refinery’s commissioning as a “euphoric moment” for him in a series of tweets on Monday.

According to Gov. Sanwo-Olu, he earlier accompanied Mr Bola Tinubu to China in 2006 to solicit investors for the newly established Lagos Free Trade Zone.

“It was a privilege for me to be a part of the delegation that accompanied him to China in 2006,” he tweeted.

The recently inaugurated Dangote Refinery is anticipated to produce 900,000 metric tonnes of polypropylene in a single train, the largest single train in the world, in addition to 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day.

“The facility we are commissioning today is aimed to reposition Nigeria as a key player in the downstream petroleum sector,” Mr Dangote said in his address.

CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele has said the refinery is more than capable of delivering all of Nigeria’s domestic consumption given its processing capability.

“This will not only aid our domestic production needs but also help in generating export revenue for our country,” he said.
