The Lagos State Government said on Sunday that the state would no longer allow the distribution or use of Styrofoam or other single-use plastics.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources, made this announcement in a statement that he released on Sunday.

Restaurants utilize Styrofoam to make their throwaway plates.

Wahab stated that the decision was made in response to the environmental threat posed by single-use plastics, particularly the non-biodegradable Styrofoam.

“Following the menace which single-use plastics especially non-biodegradable Styrofoam are causing on the environment, the Lagos State government through the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources  is hereby announcing a ban on the usage and distribution of Styrofoam and other single-use plastics in the State with immediate effect.”

Recall that the commissioner called on PSP waste operators to digitise their operations for improved waste management.

Wahab said digitisation would enhance transparency in their operations.

He emphasized that the time had come for PSP operators to set up an internet site where GPS receivers were installed in their vehicles to offer precise positions, and he recommended the operators to put in place adequate data collation and enumeration of all commercial and private facilities being serviced.
