At the maiden convocation of Bauchi State University, Gadau, Professor Attahiru Jega, the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), emphasized the urgent need for evidence-based constitutional reforms in Nigeria before 2027.

He stressed the importance of decentralizing powers and resources from the federal level to state and local governments, drawing inspiration from successful federal models such as India, Canada, and the USA.

During his lecture on “Safeguarding Nigeria’s Future: Prioritizing Citizen’s Welfare and Security Amidst Challenges,” Prof Jega highlighted the economic structure’s colonial origins, designed to serve the interests of colonial powers. He argued that Nigeria is not a failed state but rather a “failing state” with a need for significant reforms.

Jega proposed refraining from creating additional states and local government areas (LGAs) but redistributing resources to make existing entities financially viable. He emphasized the importance of drastic cuts in governance costs, transparency, accountability, and anti-corruption oversight.

On economic recommendations, Jega called for diversification from crude oil dependence, increased investment in agriculture and agro-allied processing, and the revival of industries for both domestic and export markets. He urged the government to adopt independent development plans, free from IMF and World Bank influence.

To address governance challenges, Jega suggested amendments to the Electoral Act 2022, focusing on enhancing the legal framework for elections’ integrity. He emphasized the need to reform political party roles in leadership recruitment and candidate selection. Additionally, he called for judiciary reforms to protect their integrity and insulate them from corrupt electoral dispute resolutions.

In the realm of anti-corruption efforts, Jega recommended strengthening anti-corruption agencies, transparent budgeting, and substantial reductions in governance costs at all levels. Overall, his comprehensive proposals aimed to shape a more sustainable and prosperous future for Nigeria.
