The Islamic State (IS) group has asserted its involvement in a deadly blast targeting a vehicle in eastern Kabul, resulting in at least three casualties.

Kabul police spokesperson Khalid Zadran revealed that a bomb concealed in a cart near a minivan caused the Tuesday incident, leaving three dead and four wounded.

On Wednesday, Zadran disclosed the detention of a suspect who admitted to his role in the attack.

The IS claimed responsibility through its Telegram channel, stating it “detonated an explosive device on a vehicle transporting employees of the Pul-e-Charki prison.”

This marks the second attack within days, with IS previously acknowledging responsibility for a Saturday bus explosion in the Dasht-e-Barchi neighborhood, killing a minimum of five people—mainly from the historically persecuted Shiite Hazara community.

IS’s regional chapter has consistently targeted Shiites, considering them heretics, conducting numerous attacks against the community in recent months. In November, another bus explosion in Dasht-e-Barchi claimed at least seven lives, a tragedy also claimed by IS.

Despite a notable decline in bomb blasts and suicide attacks since the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021, following the end of their insurgency, various armed groups, including IS, persist as threats in Afghanistan.
