On Wednesday, as gunmen pursued an accountant working for the Cross River Ministry of Education to the former Government Secretariat close to Government House in Calabar, the accountant was shot.
After going to a bank to make some withdrawals, the accountant—who was wounded in the thigh—was followed to the secretariat.

The victim was shot at close range by the two shooters, who were reported to have followed him to his office building where they forcibly stole the bag containing cash from him.
The spokesperson of the state Police Command, SP Irene Ugbo, who confirmed the story, said the victim was immediately rushed to the Naval Referral hospital for medical attention.
Mr. Ugbo denounced the conduct and stated that the gunman, who were allegedly following the victim on a motorcycle, were already being pursued by the police.
There has been an increase in motorbike robberies in the city lately.
