NEWS DIGEST– The State Security Service (SSS) has confirmed the arrest of Cyril Ndifon, the former Dean of the Law faculty at the University of Calabar (UNICAL), who was suspended by the institution due to allegations of sexual harassment. Peter Afunanya, the Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications of the SSS, announced this arrest in a statement, revealing that it was made at the request of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Crimes Commission (ICPC).

Afunanya mentioned that Ndifon had ignored invitations sent to him by the SSS regarding the allegations against him, which ultimately led to his arrest on Wednesday, October 4. The ICPC sought the collaboration of the SSS in dealing with the sex scandal involving Professor Cyril Ndifon. Ndifon had been the Dean of the Faculty of Law at UNICAL before these accusations emerged.

The ICPC had notified Ndifon multiple times to appear before them, but he consistently declined these invitations. As a result, a court order was obtained that led to his arrest in Calabar, Cross River State by ICPC operatives. In the spirit of interagency cooperation, the SSS supported the ICPC in carrying out this operation.

The allegations against Ndifon came to light during a protest by female Law students at UNICAL on August 15. The students expressed their grievances through placards, highlighting slogans such as “Law students are not Bonanza, Prof. Ndifon should stop grabbing us. The Faculty of Law is not a brothel” and “Ndifon must go for our sanity.” Two days after the protest, the university suspended Ndifon and initiated an investigation into the allegations.

This is not the first time Ndifon has faced suspension related to similar accusations. In 2015, he was suspended when a final-year student accused him of raping her in his office. Despite Ndifon denying these allegations and considering them falsehoods, the recent incident has led to another suspension and the involvement of law enforcement agencies.
