The ongoing construction at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, is reportedly paused, as the contractor handling this job has said that it was not possible to complete.

The Project Manager of PW Nigeria Limited, Mr. Mahbub Khan, who is handling the contract, has opened up on many obstacles hindering the rapid construction of the runway.

In a statement from Mr. Khan to the House of Representatives from Enugu State, he said there were insufficient asphalt plants, rainy season nd other technical issues, which ahs posed as challenges towards this project.

According to Khan, about 75% of the work has been done, and he explained it will take about 10 weeks, without the disruption of rain, before the runway will be completed.

“There’s problem of manpower, we have limited manpower. Even though we have resumed work but all the workers are not back. Rain is a challenge too because materials are wet all the time and we have to allow them dry. The lockdown also is a big problem because of the checkpoints; so there’s delay in materials arriving site,” he said.

The Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) officials supervising the job, have disagreed with the contractor on how much work has actually been done.

FAAN insisted that not over 65% of the project has been completed. The body has also complained that the contractor was yet to give them the programme of work. However, satisfaction was expressed with the current work on ground at the airport.
