A gasoline tanker fire resulted from an accident in Peke village along the Oko-Olowo area on the Ilorin/Bode-Saadu/Jebba Expressway, Kwara State, on Tuesday, leaving no fewer than 25 people dead and 15 critically injured.

A heavy-duty vehicle, an 18-seater bus, and a gasoline tanker with the plate number JJN 17 XW were all involved in the collision.

According to eyewitnesses, a heavy-duty vehicle from Lagos State and a petrol tanker from Niger State collided head-on because the tanker was traveling on the incorrect side of the road.

The collision, it was further gathered, ignited a fire that rapidly consumed both vehicles and also affected the 18-seater bus which was also coming from Lagos.

On Wednesday, Mr. Stephen Dawulung, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, verified the accident and said he will release more information later.

According to him, some of the bodies found at the location had been interred by family members.

The incident which was also confirmed by the Kwara State Director of Fire Service, Mr John Falade, said firemen responded to a fire at Peke village at about 3.18pm on Tuesday.

“On November 28, 2023, around 15:18 hours, the Kwara State Fire Service responded to a fire at Peke village along Oko-Olowo Bode-Saadu Expressway in Moro Local Government Area, Kwara State.

“The firemen diligently worked to quench the inferno, but unfortunately, 25 lives were lost, and around 15 people were rescued with injuries.”

Falade sent his profound condolences for the event that resulted in numerous fatalities and emphasized the necessity for drivers to prioritize safe driving habits.

Additionally, he issued a warning to motorists and other users of the road to always follow safety precautions when operating a vehicle.
