The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has halted fifteen trucks carrying food products in Sokoto state as part of its efforts to stop smuggling, which has made the country’s growing commodity prices worse.

From a statement, Abubakar Chafe, NCS Sokoto Command spokesperson, disclosed to reporters on Saturday that the cars were detained along the Gwadabawa-Illela route.

According to Mr Chafe, the vehicles’ heavy loads of farm produce led to the interceptions.

He said the command was currently in possession of the vehicles and that an investigation had been launched to determine the owners and final destinations of the food products.

The spokesperson explained that the operation was carried out by a combined team of the NCS Sokoto command, officers of the federal operation unit and the intelligence unit of the service.

Mr Chafe added that the operation became necessary with the prevailing inflation of food items in the country.
