NEWS DIGEST – Rotary Club District 9125, Naraguta, Jos on Thursday offered an undisclosed cash gift to Mrs. Anthonia Livinus, a widow and first commercial tricycle rider in Jos.

The club also presented working items to the Ganaka International Special Education School, Jos to support its efforts toward empowering indigent and vulnerable persons to be self-reliant.

In a brief speech at the ceremony, Ms Theresa Eyetan, the President of the Club, said that the gesture was to promote vocational excellence and reward the beneficiaries’ diligence in service delivery.

“We want to support individual and collective initiative toward self reliance because the white collar jobs are getting more scarce,” she said.

Eyetan said that Rotary Club was a humanitarian outfit whose members were committed to improving the lives of vulnerable and indigent members of the society.

“We decided to support the special education school because it bad trudged on, in spite of dwindling resources.

“Its focus is on children with special needs; through the school’s efforts, many children have been given the opportunity to learn vocational skills and even had formal education. We want to encourage that.

“ We have offered the school some financial assistance to equip their workshops, while Mrs. Livinus was also offered some support to meet the needs of her family because she is a widow with four children.”

In a response, Livinus thanked the Club for the kind gesture, saying that she started as a commercial motorcycle rider and moved to a tricycle when government banned motorcycles in Jos.

“I got the tricycle through a hire-purchase arrangement and have used proceeds from the business to support my children through secondary and tertiary institutions,” she said.

Rev Sr Virginia Ejidike, the Vice Principal of Ganaka Special Education School, said that the institution currently had 155 students and was in dire need of government support and financial assistance from individuals and organisations.

“We need to build more vocational workshops for our students.

“We have departments for catering services, metal work, fish farming, among others. We are working toward establishing shoe making and barbing departments and shall be happy to receive support,” she said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that members of the club also made individual donations to the beneficiaries, to support what was raised by the club.
