Justice John Tsoho, Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, shared that 12,025 cases were concluded in the past legal year, while 144,019 cases remain pending. The announcement came during a special court session commemorating the new legal year and the 50th anniversary.

Highlighting the judicial challenges, the CJ disclosed that 142,755 cases from the 2021/2022 legal year carried over to 2022/2023. During this period, 15,025 new cases were filed, and 12,870 were successfully addressed. The current backlog stands at 144,910 cases, encompassing 42,784 civil, 36,061 criminal, 41,447 motions, and 24,784 civil cases.

Justice Tsoho emphasized the importance of safeguarding the judiciary’s independence and sacredness during challenging times. Reflecting on the court’s evolution, he noted its growth from one court and five judges in Lagos to 38 judicial divisions with 95 judges.
