The Senate of the University of Abuja has appointed Aisha Maikudi, the institution’s youngest Professor of Law, as the acting Vice Chancellor. Maikudi, a Professor of International Law and the current Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), was nominated during a valedictory Senate meeting held on Wednesday.

Her appointment follows the completion of tenure by the outgoing Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, who steps down on June 30, 2024, after five years of leadership.

Na’Allah announced Maikudi’s appointment in a statement, noting that it is a temporary role pending ratification by the university’s Governing Council. In her acceptance speech, Maikudi expressed her gratitude to Senate members for their confidence in her. “I want to extend my deepest respect and appreciation to you all for the strong support and unwavering commitment that you have accorded me,” she stated.

Born on January 31, 1983, Maikudi attended Queens College, Lagos, where she obtained her West African Senior School Certificate. She then proceeded to the University of Reading, graduating with an LLB in 2004, and earned an LLM from the London School of Economics & Political Science in 2005. Maikudi completed her PhD in International Law at the University of Abuja in 2015.

Maikudi joined the University of Abuja as Lecturer II on September 4, 2008, and rose to the rank of Professor in 2022. She made history as the first female Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Law in 2018 and became the pioneer Director of the University of Abuja International Centre in 2019.

An active academic, Maikudi has attended numerous national and international conferences and has conducted extensive research on United Nations Law, publishing widely in the field. She is a member of several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Bar Association, the Nigerian Law Teachers Association, and the International Federation of Women Lawyers.
