Bayelsa: Shun Illicit Drugs, Gov Diri Urges Youths, Others

NEWS DIGEST – Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri has urged youths and others in the state to shun the consumption of illicit drugs.

Speaking in Yenagoa, on Saturday, while marking this year’s International day against drug abuse with the theme: Share facts about drugs; Save lives, Diri said there will be no room for drug peddling, marketing and consumption as he further advised those who do such businesses to look for something else to do.

Represented by the Deputy Governor, Sen. Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, the governor also said the government has set up an 8-man drug abuse prevention and rehabilitation committee to fight the menace of drug.

He said, “When we talk about drug abuse, sometimes we only refer to the Youths, but that is not true. Elderly people are also involved in drug abuse. So today’s message is not just for the youths, but everyone that is involved one way or the other in drug abuse to shun drugs.

“Those of us who do business in drugs, please look for other businesses to do. A business you do that brings hardship to others cannot be a business at all because there will be no room for drug peddling, marketing and consumption.”

In her remarks, Chairman of the Bayelsa State Drug Abuse Prevention and Rehabilitation Committee, Pharm.(Dr) Faith Izibenua Zibs-Godwin thanked the governor for constituting the committee to curb the menace of drug abuse in the state.

She also advised youths to stay away from drugs and plan their future so that the society can be better for all.

Her words, “Ignorance is destroying the lives of our Youths, but this can be avoided through public campaign on the dangers of drug abuse. My advise for the youths of Bayelsa State is to stay away from drugs, be drug free, have big plans for yourself and your future”.
