The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced plans to begin a strike in two weeks if the Nigerian Federal Government does not meet their agreements.

Speaking at a press conference and protest organized by the ASUU Calabar Zone at Abia State University, Uturu Main Campus, Zonal Coordinator Comrade Happiness Uduk highlighted the unmet agreements. These include issues such as lack of salary increments, unpaid salary arrears, poor university funding, and non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances.

The union also rejected the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) and the Treasury Single Account (TSA) implementation at Abia State University, Uturu, and condemned the victimization of ASUU members at Ebonyi State University (EBSU). Additionally, they expressed concerns over the high cost of living eroding lecturers’ wages.

ASUU criticized the Federal Government’s student loan package, warning it would burden students with debt. “Universities will be shut down for academic activities in the next two weeks. Please take the message to them,” Uduk stated.

Dr. Chidi Mba, Chairman of ASUU at Abia State University, also spoke out against the Treasury Single Account. He noted that lecturers are owed between 11 and 14 months’ salaries and that some workers have had their salaries slashed. Mba called on the Abia State government to increase funding for the university.

The ASUU Calabar Zone includes the University of Calabar, University of Uyo, Alex Ekwueme University, Abia State University, Ebonyi State University, and Akwa Ibom State University.
