Before the election next year, the Edo State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress warned party officials against endorsing candidates for governor. It also threatened sanctions for anyone who disobeyed the order.
When the party leaders met with Hon. Ehiozuwa Agbonayinma, a potential governor candidate, at the party secretariat on Wednesday, state APC deputy chairman Jaret Tenebe issued the warning in Benin, the state’s capital.
He told Agbonayinma that he had started well by coming to inform the party of his ambition after his consultation.
He said, “The best thing is what you have done today. You can now talk to our people in the various local governments. Let our people know about the various MoUs signed by the Obaseki government without any work done – they will form the basis for the campaign, draw their attention to the neglect of our traditional rulers in the state,” adding, “From your credentials, you have what it takes to lead.”

In a previous speech to the party executives, Agbonayinma requested their support for his nomination as a candidate for the party, claiming that he had been mentored by the state’s former governor, Adams Oshiomhole, who he claimed had performed in all three of the state’s senatorial districts without bias.
“APC must rescue this state to the glory of Almighty God. I am here to plead. I have what it takes to lead this state, I have the capacity. Support me for the nomination for the governorship. I have the capacity to do what others have not done”, Agbonayinma assured, promising that he would carry the party executives along in decision-making if elected governor.
The candidate, a former member of the House of Representatives, listed his accomplishments in prior government roles while bemoaning the slow rate of progress in each area of the state.
Besides, Agbonayinma noted that while President Bola Tinubu has done well by providing palliatives for fuel subsidy removal to all states, Edo has yet to commence the distribution of the palliatives to the people of the state, adding, “They will account for the palliatives.”
