Yobe Chief Judge Launches Tribunal for Local Government Election Disputes

Yobe State is preparing for local government elections, and in this regard, the State Chief Judge, Justice Gumna Kashim Kaigama, has inaugurated 27 chairmen and members of the Local Government Election Petition and Appeal Tribunal.

The inauguration ceremony was held at the Conference Hall of the State High Court of Justice in Damaturu on Thursday.

Justice Gumna explained to journalists that the tribunal consists of two parts: one to hear election petitions initially and another to handle appeals arising from the decisions of the lower tribunal.

He clarified that two tribunals were established for each of the state’s three senatorial districts to handle original petitions, and an additional appeal tribunal was created for each senatorial zone to handle appeals.

“Now, a lower tribunal and the appeal tribunal are composed of three members, the chairman and other members.

“Their main objective is to hear and determine election petitions arising from the local government election. This is their primary duty”, the Yobe Chief Judge said.

He tasked members of the tribunal to work hard and do justice to each of the petitions that may be brought before them, stressing that people are watching them.

Recall that, Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission has slated the 8th of June, 2024, as the date for the local government council election.
