NEWS DIGEST– The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) opened an online recruitment portal for the position of constables within a week, and it has since received over 288,000 applications as of Monday.

However, the portal which was opened on October 15, 2023, has only 217,105 of the applicants met the basic requirements for consideration for the next stage of the recruitment, according to the Police Service Commission (PSC) in a statement released on Tuesday.

Despite the high number of candidates, about 46,868 candidates were rejected due to being overaged, according to the PSC spokesman, Ikechukwu Ani.

Ani also noted that 217,300 candidates applied for General Duty posts, and 70,676 for specialist posts.

Ani advised applicants that the application process had no financial implications. Interested candidates are expected to visit the recruitment portal before November 26, 2023.

The Chairman of the PSC, Dr. Solomon Arase, retired Inspector-General of Police, reportedly commended Nigerian youths for showing greater interest in pursuing a career in the Nigeria Police Force.

Arase assured the public that the recruitment exercise would be transparent and merit-driven. He encouraged interested candidates to visit the recruitment portal continuously to apply for consideration for recruitment.

The PSC’s statement added that the recruitment exercise was solely for candidates that met the basic requirements, including physical fitness, an O’Level Certificate, evidence of birth certificate, and a valid means of identification.

Candidates will also be subject to background checks before eventual enlistment into the force. The police force has been under scrutiny due to questions surrounding its efficiency during the #EndSARS protests, and this recruitment exercise may serve as an opportunity to improve its image.

The NPF is currently undergoing structural reforms, which includes creating better job opportunities, prioritizing community policing, and building trust with citizens. The recruitment of new officers may help address some of these concerns.

This achievement recorded within a week of the opening of the recruitment portal is a strong indication of youths’ interest in joining the Nigeria Police Force.

“The application is without any monetary implications whatsoever and applicants are advised to take note.

“The chairman of the commission, Dr Solomon Arase, retired Inspector General of Police commended the Nigerian youths for showing greater interest in pursuing a career in the Nigeria Police Force and assured that the commission would ensure that the ongoing recruitment exercise is transparent and merit-driven.

He called on the youths to continue to visit the recruitment portal to apply for consideration for recruitment,” Ani said.
