The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Wahab Egbewole, has raised concerns about the university’s escalating monthly electricity bill, which has soared from N70 million to an unsustainable N230 million.

The vice-chancellor In an email sent to university staff and students, attributed the steep increase to recent tariff hikes by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).

He stressed the significant strain this has placed on the university’s budget, calling for an immediate and comprehensive reassessment of electricity consumption.

Egbewole urged staff and students to adopt more prudent electricity usage practices to help alleviate the financial burden.

He emphasized the administration’s dedication to exploring and implementing cost-saving measures. As part of these efforts, the university is actively negotiating alternative power supply solutions.

Egbewole announced that new buildings under construction in the Faculties of Agriculture, Arts, Environmental Science, Law, and Social Sciences would include provisions for alternative power sources.

Strategies are also being developed to ensure all faculties and units have reliable and sustainable power options.

Additionally, Egbewole highlighted the importance of protecting these new facilities from theft and vandalism, emphasizing the need for stringent safeguarding and maintenance efforts.
