NEWS DIGEST– The University of Benin Teaching Hospital Staff School (UBTHSC) in Benin City has emerged as the winner of the 2023 LAPO Secondary School Quiz Competition. The school scored 45 points to defeat five other schools from Edo and Delta States.

The competition was highly competitive, with strong competition from Don Bosco Science Academy (Edo), Marble Hill (Okpanam, Delta), Graceville College (Asaba, Delta), Noble Academy (Okpanam, Delta), and Baptist High School (Edo). However, UBTHSC emerged as the overall best of the annual scholarly event.

Don Bosco Science Academy came in second place with 35 points, while Marble Hill secured the third position with 30 points. Noble Academy and Graceville College had a tie with 25 points each, and Baptist High School came in sixth place with 20 points.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAPO Microfinance Bank (LAPO MFB), Cynthia Ikponmwosa, expressed her satisfaction with the competition and the platform it provides for competitive learning. She emphasized the importance of access to quality education, particularly for children who may be deprived of such opportunities.

LAPO MFB, an offshoot of LAPO NGO, is committed to ensuring sustainable platforms for building sound minds to meet the human capital needs of society. The bank shares similar values with LAPO NGO, especially in the areas of social impact and human capital development.

Honestus Obadiora, the Executive Director of LAPO Organisation, lamented the challenges faced by the Nigerian educational system, including inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, and a shortage of academic staff. The annual secondary school quiz competition, which was instituted in 2006, is LAPO’s contribution to the rejuvenation of the secondary education sector in the country.

The quiz competition has not only increased students’ understanding of science subjects and current affairs in Edo and Delta States, but it has also provided a platform for teachers and students to exchange ideas and learning. In 2023, over 325 public and private secondary schools from Edo and Delta States participated in the competition.

Obadiora also announced that the annual quiz competition will be extended to Ondo State starting from this year. This expansion demonstrates LAPO’s commitment to promoting education and knowledge exchange beyond Edo and Delta States.
