The federal government of Nigeria and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) have announced their joint efforts to introduce energy-efficient cooling solutions nationwide. This declaration came to light during a meeting of the National Technical Committee of the Scaling-up Energy-Efficiency and Climate-Friendly Cooling project convened in Abuja.

The committee, formed through a partnership between the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) and UNEP, supported by the Clean Cooling Collaborative (CCC), gathered to deliberate and assess the project’s work plan for the year 2024.

Their primary objective is to accelerate the deployment of energy-efficient air conditioning systems equipped with climate-friendly, low-GWP (global warming potential) refrigerants across residential, commercial, and public buildings.

Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, the director-general of ECN, stressed the significance of this meeting as a pivotal step in implementing sustainable cooling practices. He reiterated the commitment of both ECN and UNEP towards promoting climate-friendly solutions within Nigeria.

Furthermore, Dr. Abdullahi emphasized that fostering collaboration among experts and stakeholders is crucial. This collaboration aims to ensure a comprehensive and sustainable approach towards achieving climate targets set forth by the country.
