NEWS DIGEST – Typhoon Faxai on Monday pounded the wider Tokyo area with devastating winds and torrential rains, killing three people and injuring dozens of others.
The storm moved out over the Pacific Ocean after passing over eastern Japan, but authorities were still warning of strong winds, high waves and mudslides in the greater Tokyo areas and North-Eastern Japan.
According to Kyodo News Agency, one woman in her 50s died in Tokyo after she was apparently knocked over by a gust of wind.
It also reported that an 87-year-old man was killed after being trapped under a fallen tree in Kanagawa prefecture.
Kyodo added that a 47-year-old man was pronounced dead at a hospital after he fell at the Yokosuka naval base in Kanagawa.

“Faxai ripped off roofs, disrupted rush-hour commuters and caused wider power outages, while downing two electricity pylons in Chiba prefecture,’’ Kyodo said.
According to Tokyo Electric Power, about 720,000 households were still without electricity in the prefectures of Tokyo, Ibaraki, Chiba, Kanagawa and Shizuoka.
Meanwhile, East Japan Railway had planned to resume all train services in the greater Tokyo area at 8.00 a.m. (2300 GMT Sunday), but many services were delayed or remained suspended.
According to broadcaster NHK, more than 160 flights were cancelled on Monday following the cancellation of 135 flights on the previous day.
The Meteorological Agency said Faxai was off North-Eastern Japan after making landfall near the city of Chiba about 13 hours earlier.
It added that the storm was travelling North-East at 30 kilometres per hour with maximum sustained winds of 126 km/h and gusts of 180 km/h.
Faxai had dumped more than 440 millimetres of rain in the 24 hours until early Monday on the city of Izu in Shizuoka prefecture. (Xinhua/NAN)
