NEWS DIGEST- The Tunisian security units have successfully arrested 1,200 individuals of various nationalities who were planning to illegally cross the Mediterranean and reach Europe, according to local media reports. The operation, carried out by National Guard Units, took place in the southeastern province of Sfax as part of a larger security campaign aimed at curbing waves of illegal migration.

Houcemeddine Jbabli, spokesperson for the Tunisian National Guard, revealed that the security units not only apprehended a significant number of potential illegal immigrants but also managed to arrest several organizers responsible for facilitating these dangerous sea voyages. Additionally, the units successfully seized wooden boats that were intended to transport the migrants.

The security campaign, launched on Saturday on the Island of Kerkennah in Sfax province, witnessed the participation of multiple special security units and rapid intervention teams. An aerial operation was conducted to enhance the effectiveness of the mission.

The crackdown arose from the fact that the coast of Sfax province had recently become a major departure point for individuals attempting to illegally enter the Italian Island of Lampedusa. Located a mere 80 kilometers from Tunisian shores, Lampedusa has traditionally been the first stop for illegal immigrants embarking on their sea journey to Italy.

This successful operation marks a significant step in combating illegal immigration in the region and demonstrates Tunisia’s commitment to addressing this pressing issue.
