A yet-to-be identified student of Institute of Technology Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, was on Tuesday crushed to death by a truck conveying laterite at Sango roundabout area, leaving two others with severe injuries.

When the catastrophe happened, the three students were traveling to lectures on a motorbike.

It was said that when the truck driver approached the roundabout on his way from Sango to Maraba, he lost control and collided with the car ahead of him, which then struck the motorbike carrying the three students.

The two who suffered serious injuries were taken to the hospital, but the dead is reported to have struck his forehead on the pavement of the road and died at that spot.

The spokesperson of Kwara State Police Command, ASP Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, who confirmed the incident, said that driver of the truck had been detained by the police at the ‘A’ Division, Challenge, Ilorin, while the truck had been confiscated.

“It’s very unfortunate that a student lost his life in the incident, two others are currently receiving medical treatment in the hospital.

“Though investigation has commenced, it’s annoying that driver of the truck could not slow down to obey the big bump at the roundabout and lost control to claim a life”, she said.

Similarly, spokesperson of the school, Hajia Halimat Garuba, described the incident as very sad.

“It’s very sad that one of our students in IOT died in that accident and two others sustained severe injuries. I can’t get you the details of their identities now,” she said.
