President Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Bassirou Faye on his election as Senegal’s new leader.

This was made known by Mr Tinubu’s media aide, Ajuri Ngelale, in a statement released on Wednesday.

The president expressed his belief that Mr Faye’s election holds great promise, given his exemplary track record, and he wished him success as he assumed the responsibilities of leading the people of Senegal.

Furthermore, Mr Tinubu commended President Macky Sall for overseeing an election that was widely regarded as peaceful and transparent. He said the success of the presidential election in Senegal and the recent well-conducted general election in Liberia is an evidence of the region’s progress towards democracy.

As the Chairman of ECOWAS, Mr Tinubu noted that the successful conduct of the Senegal election further strengthened the sub-regional organization’s efforts to promote peace, uphold constitutional order, and foster closer ties among member states.

He concluded by extending his congratulations to the people of Senegal and assuring them of Nigeria’s continued support and best wishes.

44 year-old Mr Faye, a former tax inspector, has pledged to combat corruption, restore stability, and prioritize economic sovereignty. He has also announced plans to replace the much-criticized CFA franc currency, which is pegged to the euro, with a new Senegalese or regional West African currency.
