Only a handful of shoes make so much sense with just about any outfit, and loafers are very much part of that elite group.
And so, while my trusty white Bjorn Borg low-tops and black Vintage Chuck Taylor Converse continue to sit idle on my rack gathering dust, my black Chunky Penny Loafer has been getting all the love the last three months.
And for good reasons: It is almost like every outfit I curate with some sneakers at the base happened to look much better with loafers instead. While there is an argument to be made that my style leans somewhat ‘refined’ rather than ‘casual’, I am willing to bet this isn’t a mere coincidence.
From timeless classics to sleek minimalism, it is easy to see why fashion influencers are all about loafers. For every four men’s fashion content I scroll past on Instagram, one proudly features these beauties of a shoe. Or could it be the algorithm? The truth is this: Loafers just make so much sense.
So, if you are resisting buying loafers because of an absence of styling know-how or have a few pairs already and struggle to bring out their best, here are six top picks for all three most popular loafers iteration in the market.
Penny Loafers
My favourite! Think of them like this: you have a neighbour who is always ready to help with everything from fixing the socket that no longer works to lending you their gas to finish your meal. These shoes are your go-to loafers for casual hangouts and smart-casual affairs.
Tassel Loafers
Tassels, ah! I think of them as elegant storytellers. They whisper sophistication without saying a word. When you want to take your look up a notch, tassel loafers are the answer. I mean: dinner dates, gallery openings, or slightly dressier ensembles? Tassels have your back.
Horsebit Loafers
I am the biggest Penny loafer fan, but still — I respect that horsebit (Gucci) loafers are a luxury staple. Seriously, just pair them with quality fabrics, and let the world know you’ve arrived.
