The Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has announced the immediate suspension of special promotions within the Nigerian Police Force. This decision was revealed during the decoration ceremony for newly promoted senior officers in Abuja on Friday.

IG Egbetokun expressed his disapproval of officers lobbying for special promotions, emphasizing that any officer recommended by politicians or influential personalities would face disciplinary action. “Henceforth, anyone recommended by politicians and influential personalities in society will be disciplined,” Egbetokun stated firmly.

He clarified that any future need for special promotions would be managed directly by the police administration, ensuring that the process remains fair and merit-based. Additionally, the IG banned the practice of undue soliciting for postings, warning that violators would be dealt with according to the law.

During the ceremony, Egbetokun decorated 15 senior police officers who were recently promoted. The newly promoted officers include one Deputy Inspector-General of Police, 11 Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, and three Commissioners of Police.

In his address to the newly decorated officers, Egbetokun urged them to meet high expectations and serve as exemplary leaders for their junior colleagues. He emphasized the importance of integrity and professionalism in their new roles.

The suspension of special promotions and the warnings against political interference underscore IG Egbetokun’s commitment to fostering a merit-based and disciplined police force. Further details regarding these measures are expected to follow.
