Nigeria’s Super Eagles faced a setback in their quest to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after suffering a 2-1 defeat to the Squirrels of Benin in Abidjan.

Despite a promising start with Raphael Onyedika’s goal in the first half, the Super Eagles conceded two goals before halftime, courtesy of strikes from Jodel Dossou and Steve Mounie.

With this loss, Nigeria’s position in Group C remains precarious, as they are yet to secure a win after four matches.

Currently sitting in fifth place, the Super Eagles have only three points, narrowly ahead of Zimbabwe, who still have a game in hand. Benin Republic, on the other hand, leads Group C with seven points.

The defeat highlights the challenges facing Nigeria’s World Cup qualification campaign, raising concerns about their chances of making it to the tournament in 2026.
