The newly appointed head coach of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, has opened up about a missed opportunity that could have altered the course of his playing career. Finidi George, who gained fame for his stellar performances with Ajax Amsterdam and Real Betis, disclosed that he was on the brink of joining Spanish giants Real Madrid during his prime.

Speaking on Brila FM, Finidi lamented his failure to secure a move to Real Madrid, citing financial constraints as the stumbling block. Despite reaching a personal agreement with the club and holding discussions with then-coach Capello, the transfer fell through due to an impasse over the transfer fee between Real Madrid and Ajax.

Reflecting on the missed opportunity, Finidi expressed regret at not donning the iconic white jersey of Real Madrid. He emphasized the transformation of the club over the past 25 years, noting the financial struggles they faced during his potential transfer period.

Subsequently, Finidi George went on to showcase his talent at Real Betis, where he etched his name in the club’s history books by netting 38 goals in 130 appearances. Though his journey took a different turn, Finidi’s legacy remains indelible in the annals of football history.
