In preparation for today’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) group game against Equatorial Guinea, Super Eagles Coach Jose Peseiro faces challenges as injuries and late arrivals force adjustments to the team’s formation.

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen remains the sole available striker, with key players like Sadiq Umar and Victor Boniface ruled out due to injuries. The duo has been replaced by Paul Onuachu and Terem Moffi, though their late call-ups may hinder their participation in the opening game.

Late arrival of Kelechi Iheanacho, recovering from a knock in the United Kingdom, further complicates the situation. Osimhen, the only fit striker, was kept away from physical contact during Friday’s training as a precaution, being instructed to avoid aggressive tackles in subsequent sessions.

To address the shortage, Team Captain Ahmed Musa, initially set to play as a winger, is now designated as the backup striker for the opening game. With Moffi, Iheanacho, and Onuachu unavailable, Musa is expected to take on the role of deputy striker in the absence of other options.

Nigeria, three-time African champions, commence their quest for a fourth title today against Equatorial Guinea, with subsequent matches against Cote d’Ivoire on January 18 and Guinea-Bissau on January 22 in the group stage.
