On December 12, 2023, two South Korean nationals, previously kidnapped by gunmen in the Emughan Clan, Abua/Odual Local Council of Rivers State, were successfully rescued. The gunmen had ambushed a convoy of Daewoo workers along the Ahoada/Qbua axis of the East-West, resulting in the tragic deaths of four soldiers and two drivers.

The South Korea Foreign Ministry officially confirmed the safe release of the kidnapped individuals in a statement, revealing that the rescue operation took place yesterday. Acting Deputy Director of the 6 Division, Army Public Relations, Major Jonah Danjuma, had earlier expressed ongoing efforts for the unconditional release of the foreigners. The army, committed to justice, vowed to apprehend the perpetrators responsible for the loss of their personnel.

Despite the relief of the hostages’ release, concerns arise over potential reprisal attacks. Indigenous people from affected communities, including Aminigboko, Owerewere, and Egunghan in Abua Odual, have raised alarms about the escalating fear, prompting some residents to flee their ancestral homes.

The paramount rulers of these communities jointly appealed to the army to reconsider any actions that could further instigate fear among innocent villagers, highlighting the adverse consequences on their well-being, forcing many to seek refuge in bushes with limited access to water and food, exposing them to health and psychological risks.
