The “Light Up Nigeria Project,” which aims to provide electricity throughout the nation, was on Monday launched by the Federal Government in the South East.

At the South East Business roundtable in Enugu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Tinubu announced the project and stated that it was an affirmation of the federal government’s commitment to growing the nation’s industrial sector.

He said, “We gather here today to embark on a transformative journey, the launch of the Light of Nigeria project in the southeastern states.

“What we are witnessing is the second launch of the strategic collaboration with the Nigeria Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) and other invaluable partners.

“We are sure of the direct pursuit of the priority set by His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu and the project is a long-awaited solution to the power supply that undermines the economy,” he said.

The intervention, according to Shettima, Chairman of the Board of Directors, NDPHC, was a planned attempt to boost Nigeria’s power supply, engineer the country’s economy, and act as the oil wheel of industries.

Shettima said that Tinubu still considered the project to be a top priority, even though he described Southeast as the “industrial power of the country.

“Igbos are resourceful, practically mobile, and aspirational learners. The country looks to you for hope.

“I can assure you that President Tinubu means well for Nigeria and Ndigbo and Southeast; the southeast governors are among the best in the country,” he said.

Speaking, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, emphasised that the project would be pursued by the federal government to accomplish its goals.

He claims that since the project’s privatisation in 2013, it has been designed to address significant issues facing the Nigerian electricity supply sector.

He, however, lamented that the power supply had not improved but rather continued to deteriorate despite the significant investment made in the sector.

Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, said in his welcome speech that the project represented a new era for the South East’s industrialisation and power.

Mbah encouraged industrialists in the area to fully embrace the initiative, which was developed by the federal government and the NDPHC to increase power supply to industrial clusters in the Southeast.

He pledged his government’s continued support to industrialists and other private investors across the state to complement the undeniable boost that the Light-up Nigeria Project would bring.
