Shearer Slams England’s Lackluster Performance Against Denmark

Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has criticized the England squad for their lackluster performance against Denmark in the 2024 European Championships.

At the Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt on Thursday, the Three Lions were held to a 1-1 draw by the Danes. Shearer expressed disappointment over the English team’s lack of energy and quality, asserting that Denmark was the superior team during the match.

Denmark, under coach Kasper Hjulmand, had 51% possession and managed 7 out of 16 attempts on target, compared to England’s 4 out of 12. Shearer specifically criticized the Harry Kane-led English side for their underwhelming display.

“You can see players lying on their backs – they look absolutely shattered, the England players. There’s no excuse for that,” he said on BBC.

“There was no energy, no pace to the game. We didn’t run in behind until the last 10 or 15 minutes, we got caught too many times on the ball, and too many sloppy passes and in truth, Denmark was the better team and deserved to win.

“It was very poor, it wasn’t good enough. I wouldn’t say lack of effort, not trying, but there’s so much more to come from those players.”
